It is said that what happens in the US happens in the UK shortly afterwards. This clip of the Daily Show shows US conservatives making the argument that it is ok to attack the incomes and the dignity of the weakest and the poorest in society whilst insisting that tax cuts for the rich are a necessary component of recovery. These are many of the same arguments that are used by David Cameron, George Osborne and their cohorts in the Conservative Party in the UK to berate the poor and disabled whilst justifying tax cuts for millionaires.

Those calling for tax cuts for the wealthy “makers” and “strivers” are largely concerned with the top one percent of income earners. They choose to ignore the social contract the people have with the government and with each other. Could any business or individual thrive without a social safety net, healthcare provision, an educated workforce, law enforcement, transport networks, environmental protection and the countless other centrally provided support systems that our taxes deliver. All of these things are required for corporations and entrepreneurs to be successful.
Too much wealth in too few hands distorts the way we view success. Of course hard work and ingenuity should be able to thrive and be handsomely rewarded but we should never lose sight of the fact that everyone who has ever paid a penny in tax is also a stakeholder in the success of entrepreneurs and businesses that peddle their wares.

I have said it before and I will say it again.
We are not America. It doesn’t have to be that way.
