In a transparent attempt by the Republican party leadership to embarrass the commander-in-chief, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was invited to speak to the US congress. Israel has just entered the final fortnight of an extended general election campaign and the PM is far from certain to retain his premiership so an opportunity to grandstand on the world stage was a gift that could not be ignored.
US diplomatic protocols require its political leaders to avoid diplomatic contact with any foreign politicians engaged in a domestic election campaign and the invitation to ‘Bibi’, as he fashions himself, was condemned by Obama and the DNC leadership for that very reason. Nearly 60 Democratic congressman boycotted the PM’s speech which was full of bluster and vociferously criticised Obama but essentially was the same “Iraq’s a ticking nuclear time bomb” warning he gave to congress 19 years ago and what feels like annually ever since. All in all it was exactly what the GOP wanted and they showed their glee by giving Netanyahu a fulsome ovation which Jon Stewart compared to a…well…watch the clip and find out for yourself.
